Essence Fest 2020 brand identity

The original festival in New Orleans was switched to a live-streamed event.
The goal was to create a new identity reflecting this change and showing Essence's commitment to addressing American social issues, particularly
for the community it represents.

Craft an iconic and powerful identity

The fight against racial injustice has been a long-standing process in the history of the United States. The design team's brainstorming and style frames led to a collage design, aiming for a timeless feel with newspaper textures.

Further enhancement was achieved by creating a mood board and adding abstract paint lines, contours, and simple shapes like circles to enrich the graphic style.

The cover

The design started with the Festival cover, setting the style for other graphics like social content, video trailers, and live performance visuals. The cover featured Angela Davis's face with collage and abstract paint. Rough paint and drawings were used to animate photos in the trailer and emphasize elements and transitions.

This work lead to the creation of a strong identity for the Festival but also allows us to produce several visual contents like the Festival main cover, video promotions, commercials, ads, Motion templates,

social media assets and live-streamed visual ident.
